Wheeling Jesuit University Receives Grant to Aid Hands on Learning

A recent collaboration between Wheeling Jesuit University and the University’s Bishop Hodges Library has resulted in funding from the Appalachian College Association (ACA) that will purchase LEGOS that will benefit grade school students that the university serves. This funding was thanks to two English majors at the university that wanted to expand the school’s curriculum resource center. The two began the work of writing the grant which they note as being difficult but also providing a valuable learning opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom.

The funding will “allow the library staff to purchase LEGOs and other materials that allow Wheeling Jesuit students, particularly those studying to be teachers, to develop hands-on learning programs that can be used in the classroom.” The LEGOs will serve as a learning tool by which children can “be more self-sufficient in their intellectual growth” and will help educators “develop fresh, innovative ways to incorporate hands-on learning into teaching.” This collaboration which resulted in the funding shows how WJU is committed to expanding their resources across academic disciplines.

Resource for Teaching Environmental Justice

Seattle University just unveiled a brand-new resource on teaching environmental justice! Last year, the University’s Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability supported Environmental Studies professor Dr. Trileigh Tucker and her exploration of the teaching of environmental justice around the country. The result is a robust resource, highlighting syllabi, unique classroom and field exercises, popular teaching texts, and a searchable database connecting themes to resources. This compilation was designed with the intention of helping others integrate environmental justice into their courses, and with the hope that it will enhance others’ teaching experiences.

Summer Institute: Teaching Peace in the 21st Century

Save the date for the upcoming Summer Institute on ‘Teaching Peace in the 21st Century’ at the University of Notre Dame. This event will take place on June 15-19, 2015 and it is a week-long program jointly sponsored by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame and USIP.

Over the past six years, a large number of Catholic colleges and universities have attended. This Institute joins together denominational and public colleges and state universities so that faculty and staff can learn why and how to build quality programs in peace and justice.  Over the past few years the Institute has even welcomed colleagues from African and Latin American universities. This year, the Catholic University of Peru and Uganda Martyrs University are just two examples of the universities which plan to attend.
